Summertime Transport Pathways From Different Northern Hemisphere Regions Into the Arctic

چکیده
Trace gases and aerosols play an important role in Arctic chemistry climate. As most tracers are transported from midlatitude source regions, long-range transport into the is one of key factors to understand current future states While previous studies have investigated airmass fraction transit time distribution Arctic, actual pathways their underlying dynamics efficiencies yet be understood. In this study, we implement a large ensemble idealized tagged pulse passive Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model version 5 identify analyze summertime different Northern Hemisphere surface regions Arctic. Three identified as those associated with fast, intermediate slow scales. Midlatitude can troposphere via fast pathway (∼8 days), which moves northward region mainly through transient eddies. For pathway, happens on 1–3 weeks’ scales, first zonally by jet stream, then advected over Alaska northern North Atlantic. Tropical subtropical lower stratosphere (1–3 months), lifted upward tropical stratosphere, following isentropic surfaces.

متن کاملOn the Summertime Strengthening of the Northern Hemisphere Pacific Sea-Level Pressure Anticyclone
This study revisits the question posed by Hoskins on why the Northern Hemisphere Pacific sea level pressure (SLP) anticyclone is strongest and maximally extended in summer when the Hadley cell descent in the northern subtropics is the weakest. The paradoxical evolution is revisited because anticyclone buildup to the majestic summer structure is gradual, spread evenly over the preceding 4–6 mont...
متن کاملIncreasing atmospheric antimony contamination in the northern hemisphere: snow and ice evidence from Devon Island, Arctic Canada.
Adopting recently developed clean laboratory techniques, antimony (Sb) and scandium (Sc) deposition were measured in a 63.72 m-long ice core (1842-1996) and a 5 m deep snow pit (1994-2004) collected on Devon Island, Canadian High Arctic. Antimony concentrations ranged from 0.07 to 108 pg g(-1) with a median of 0.98 pg g(-1)(N= 510). Scandium, used as a conservative reference element, revealed t...
متن کاملA climatology based on reanalysis of baroclinic developmental regions in the extratropical northern hemisphere.
Regions of the occurrence of different phenomena related to the development of baroclinic disturbances are reviewed for the Northern Hemisphere extratropics, using National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research reanalysis data. The occurrence of height lows appears to be related to the orography near the earth's surface and with surface- and upper-air cyc...
